A Quantitative Design for Disassembly Methodology

A new scientific paper developed within the Horizon 2020 INFINITE project has been published in Buildings (MDPI).
“A New Approach of Design for Disassembly Quantitative Assessment for Building Integrated Systems.” presents a quantitative Design for Disassembly (DfD) assessment methodology tailored for prefabricated and building-integrated systems.

The methodology provides a practical tool to assess detachability for:
• maintenance
• reuse
• recycling

Unlike many existing approaches, the tool is designed for early-stage design support and does not require prior environmental studies. It uses mass and expected lifespan as weighting factors, making it accessible and directly applicable for manufacturers and designers.

The methodology was tested on several INFINITE technologies, including the Building Integrated Solar Thermal (BIST) system, as well as green façade and air distribution kits. The results helped identify design improvements that increased maintenance, reuse, and recyclability performance.

The paper has been developed by researchers from:
• NOBATEK (Maxime Deru, Pierre Roger, Maia Louvard, Saed Raji, Pascale Brassier)
• Eurac Research (Martino Gubert, Marzieh Zarei)
